Journeys into living craft

We go where skills are
practiced, learned and passed on

Create

Sharing Knowledge,
Sustaining Craft

By sharing their skills with others, craftspeople can create an additional source of income beyond selling the things they make. It is a way of valuing their knowledge and experience, while creating more opportunities for these crafts to be practiced and passed on.

LESS SIGHTSEEING.
MORE DOING.
A door can lead you somewhere you never knew you wanted to go. Sometimes, all it takes is being willing to step inside.
COME AS A GUEST.
Leave WITH A STORY.

Our journeys are built around the people who keep local skills alive. The aim is to leave with a deeper understanding of the world you have entered.

The Things That Still Matter

The Courtyard Door invites you to slow down, look closer and get your hands dirty.
To follow a curiosity, learn something unfamiliar and discover the joy of making without knowing exactly where it will lead.

WOOD

SHINGLE
A wooden shingle looks simple. Making one is not. It takes an understanding of the tree, an eye for its grain, a feel for the tool and the patience to let the material guide the hand. In traditional shingle-making, knowledge lives not only in what is made, but in how it is made: in gestures refined over years, in decisions that cannot always be explained, and in skills passed from one pair of hands to another.
The Courtyard Door,
is interested in these forms of knowledge. In the people who carry them, the places that have shaped them, and the possibility of learning by doing rather than simply looking on.
When that knowledge is shared, it does not remain a relic of the past. It stays alive in the hands of those who practise it.

BLOCK PRINT
A wooden block meets cotton. Colour passes from one surface to the other, one impression at a time. The printer aligns each mark by eye, adjusts the pressure, reloads the block and begins again. A pattern emerges through repetition, yet no two impressions are entirely alike.
We spend time with the people who practice this craft, ask questions and try the technique ourselves, printing our own fabric samples along the way.
This is what ‍The Courtyard Door is about:
getting closer to a practice than we normally would as visitors. Not collecting another experience or buying something handmade, but taking the time to understand how something is made, who makes it and what it takes to keep doing it.

Ritual

Wisdom of the Drum
In the Nepalese Himalaya, we are exploring ways to encounter forms of knowledge shaped by ritual, landscape and relationships with the natural world.
We are interested in learning from people whose practices offer a different understanding of the relationship between humans, nature and the unseen. Not as observers of an unfamiliar belief system, but through encounters that allow us to listen, participate and begin to understand from within its own context.
At The Courtyard Door, we look for opportunities to get closer to knowledge we would rarely encounter on our own. Sometimes, that means learning a technique. Sometimes, it means entering a different way of seeing.

The Beauty of Wisdom

Not everything worth knowing can be found in a book.
Some knowledge lives in the hands of a craftsperson, in the way someone reads the land, or in rituals whose meaning unfolds only when you begin to understand the world they belong to.
