ABOUT

Beyond seeing.
Into knowing.

I keep thinking of all the things people know how to do,
the knowledge they carry in their hands
and how much of it, we never come to know.

Knowledge is shared, not displayed.

We are interested in the knowledge that lives in practice: in the hands of a craftsperson, in the understanding of a material, or in rituals shaped by a relationship with the natural world. The people we meet are not attractions. They are practitioners with their own knowledge, perspectives and ways of doing things. Our role is to create the opportunity to learn from them, with curiosity and respect.

Don't visit. Participate.

We believe there is more to a place than what we can see. So instead of simply moving from one sight to the next, we spend time learning a craft, working with materials and meeting the people who practice it.
Our journeys are small, curated and built around a particular place, practice or material. They offer access to encounters and experiences we would rarely find on our own.

We can't miss what we never knew existed.

There is knowledge we rarely encounter in everyday life. Skills passed on through practice, materials shaped by generations and ways of understanding the world that don't always find their way into books.
The Courtyard Door
creates journeys that bring us closer to these forms of knowledge and the people who carry them.

Who opens the Door

Hello, I am Colleen!
I have this longing for something I don't have a name for. I travel without a map. Sometimes I feel like driftwood.
And then, suddenly, I find myself somewhere I never knew I was looking for. A skill passed down through generations. Something made by hand. A way of knowing the world I hadn't encountered before. And sometimes, a kind of grief rises in me.
For the knowledge I never knew I was missing, the skills that might disappear before I even get the chance to learn they exist.
Somehow, I want to keep open the doors that were once opened to me. To bring together people who feel drawn to the little things. To the art of making, to knowledge carried through generations, to the ways people shape, understand and live with the world around them.
People who carry a similar longing somewhere in their chest.
The Courtyard Door grew out of this feeling. A way to get closer to the people who hold this knowledge, to learn through what they make and to take part in what they are willing to share. Not just to see what is there, but to begin to understand it.
Let's listen. Let's learn. Let's create.
